Winery Of The Month

Schubert

SCHUBERT has recently been awarded the top prize in two prestigious international wine awards. Firstly both the B Block Pinot Noir 2008 & Marion's Vineyard Pinot Noir 2008 were awarded gold at both the Decanter World Wine Awards & the London International Wine Challenge. Second to that the B Block Pinot Noir was given the Trophy at both awards for the best New Zealand Pinot Noir.

The "Marion’s Vineyard" Pinot Noir consists predominantly of the "Able" and "Pommard" clones while the "Schubert B Block" Pinot Noir consists primarily of the "Dijon" clones. These wines are open for tasting this month along side three other wines in the Schubert range.

Kai Schubert & Marion Deimling, both German, had been searching the world for an ideal area to grow premium Pinot Noir before they deciding on the Wairarapa.

In October 1998 Kai acquired a small, established vineyard in Martinborough and about 40 hectare of bare land just north of Martinborough, at Dakins Road. On the land at Dakins Road the development with high density planting started in spring 1999 and now 12 hectares are under vines.

While production is small, the majority of wine produced is exported into 27 countries.
